Alexander Valley Elementary School Disaster Drill
On October 30th, Alexander Valley Elementary held a disaster drill to help students and staff practice emergency procedures and strengthen overall preparedness. Fire Inspector O’Brien partnered with Firefighters Mohar and Robertson to support the event.
In preparation for the drill, Fire Inspector O’Brien met with school staff to review safety plans and ensure the exercise would run smoothly. Prior to the start of the drill, each teacher and several students were given envelopes containing specific instructions to follow during the exercise. Some participants were assigned roles such as injured or trapped staff members, adding realism to the scenario and allowing teachers to practice managing different types of situations.
During the drill, caution tape was used to simulate collapsed sections of the building and blocked exit routes, encouraging participants to identify and use alternative exits in a realistic emergency scenario. Throughout the event, the Fire Department team observed student and staff responses, provided constructive feedback, and shared recommendations for enhancing future drills.
The collaboration between the Northern Sonoma County Fire Protection District and Alexander Valley Elementary demonstrates a shared commitment to student safety, preparedness, and community resilience in the face of emergencies.
