Thank you Firefighters
Sometimes our community thanks us in unusual ways. A grateful community member recently dropped off 5-pound chocolate bars to thank us for our efforts in extinguishing a wildfire. We love it when the community thanks us. One of the best ways to show your support is to donate to the Northern Sonoma County Fire Foundation.
What is the "Fuels Crew"?
The Northern Sonoma County Fire Protection vegetation management “Fuels Crew” is funded by grants and the fire sales tax (Measure H) voted into place in 2024.
The Fuels Crew operates tools such as chainsaws and chippers to cut and chip vegetation. These efforts remove vegetation so that when wildfire burns, it is less severe and can be more easily managed.
The Fuels Crew works on projects identified in community planning efforts, such as Community Wildfire Protection Plans (CWPP) or Firewise USA action plans. A common project is “roadside vegetation management” which supports evacuations and firefighter access while serving to slow or stop the spread of wildfire. Another common project is a ridgetop shaded fuel break, which is an area along a ridge where vegetation has been modified to reduce wildfire risk. This treatment is designed to mimic the role of a natural historical fire, so that when a wildfire occurs, it burns with less intensity, saving lives and homes.
How do I get the Fuels Crew to come to my property to clear vegetation around my home?
The Fuels Crew does not provide this service; defensible space is the responsibility of property owners. A project will only occur on private property as part of a larger project with community benefits and strategic value. If you would like to have a project on your property and/or in your community, please work with your community wildfire risk reduction group, such as COPE (Communities Organized to Prepare for Emergencies) or Firewise USA. We will not respond to individual requests for service.
