Special Districts
The Northern Sonoma County Fire Protection District is a local form of government called a Special District.
A special district is a separate local government that delivers a limited number of public services to a geographically limited area. Special districts have most of the same basic powers as counties and cities, including corporate powers and tax powers.
Special Districts are directly accountable to their voters and their ratepayers. Special Districts have boards elected directly by district voters with requirements to submit annual financial and compensation reports to the State Controller. Special Districts have meeting requirements mandated by state laws pertaining to public meetings, bonded debt, record keeping, and elections. The California Special Districts Association (CSDA), in partnership with California CAD Solutions, has created a comprehensive, interactive map of independent special districts in California. CSDA’s goal is to have every special district headquarters and boundary lines represented on the map. Visit the Special Districts Mapping Project website for more information and to view the map.
